This elevated, four storey house with commanding sea views, loads of accommodation and a lovely rear garden nestled at the foot of the Table Mountain. There was however no usable sea-facing outdoor living space to take in the sunsets while entertaining outdoors. It also suffered from a confused identity with a combination of Mediterranean style columns, wrought iron balustrades and contemporary aluminum stacking doors.
Our turnaround solution was to create two simple, overlapping, rectangular steel boxes to support and extend the upper living area into a covered, outdoor, sea-facing room with a braai area. The lightweight structure was smartly designed to float off the existing concrete frame. Columns were squared off and balustrades replaced with frameless glass to create a contemporary and striking new identity.
